The police chief said that the lethal shooting of a black person by a police officer in the American city of Brooklyn Center was an accident.
Chief Tim Gannon described to news reporters that Daunte Wright was killed when a police officer intended to use Taser, but she mistakenly drew a gun instead. Moreover, the police officer was later mentioned as Kim Potter, who served Brooklyn Center Police for around twenty-six years.
Daunte Wright’s killing has ignited protests in the city and even in surrounding regions, and a curfew has been placed.
Protesters threw bottles and fireworks at officers
On Monday, the protestors went against the curfew to create a massive crowd for the 2nd night in front of the police headquarters. People said that some threw of the protestors tossed fireworks and bottles at police officers, who replied with stun grenades and tear gas.
Skirmishes in surrounding Minneapolis are ramped up after the trial of an ex-police officer alleged for George Floyd’s death.
On Sunday, Wright was dragged on account of a traffic violation, but there was an effort when he struggled to go back to his car.
On Monday morning, in a news summit, Chief Gannon played a video clip of the body camera worn by a lady police officer, which depicts Wright struggling to get back into his vehicle when police officers handcuff the person on the side of the road. Severely injured, Wright has collapsed a few streets away.
Chief Gannon described that it is his belief the police officer meant to deploy Taser but shot the person with a single bullet. He continued that there is nothing he can say to reduce the pain. Furthermore, the police officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Meanwhile, in the same news briefing, Mike Elliott (Brooklyn Center Mayor) explained that he will do anything in his power to ensure justice is done for Wright.
The whole world is watching
He added that their hearts are aching at this time, and they were in pain. Elliott said that they recognize this could not have occurred at a worse time, and this is occurring at a time that all of their community, the whole of America, indeed the whole world is watching.
On Sunday, hostile people emerged in Brooklyn Center after listening to the news of Daunte Wright’s killing.
