Department offered condolences

Robert Contee described that they honor the service and sacrifices of police officers Howard Liebengood, Brian Sicknick, and Jeffrey Smith, and offer condolences to all the heartbroken families. He added that the costs for this insurrection (both monetary and human) will be steep. Contee further explained that sixty-five D.C. police officers were wounded, such as bruises, scratches, eyes burning, and other injuries.

On 10th January, the Capitol Police declared that Howard Liebengood also passed away by suicide a few days after the mob. The United States Capitol regulators said that Howard Liebengood committed suicide on Saturday (9 January). Moreover, a spokesperson of the United States Capitol Police described that he was assigned to the Senate Division and had been serving the police department since April 2005.

In a press conference, the department said that their thoughts and prayers go out to his family, colleagues, and friends. They ask that Liebengood’s family and other USCP cops’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this very tough time.

A news agency, CBS News, said that Liebengood’s father, Howard Liebengood Sr, offered his services as the Senate sergeant at arms during 1981-1983. Two of the law enforcement regulators described to The Washington Post that the police officer passed away by suicide, a few days after Wednesday’s riot scene.
