According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia-region person was charged with purportedly stealing above three million dollars in tickets to the U.S. Open Championship for more than 7 years.
On Tuesday, in a statement, Jennifer Arbittier Williams (Acting U.S. Attorney), said that Robert Fryer (thirty-nine years old) was charged with four counts of mail scam, one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail scam, and ten counts of wire scam related to steal and keep proceeds from the illegal sale of tickets to the United States Open Championship.
A media agency, CNN, reached out to the lawyer of Robert Frayer for getting a comment. The United States Open Championship is the 3rd of 4 top golf championships, and it is on the European Tour and PGA Tour schedules.
Fryer sold tickets to third-party
American authorities accuse that Robert Fryer (a former worker of the U.S. Golf Association) embezzle above thirteen thousand American Open admission tickets from 2013 to 2019. Moreover, they describe that Fryer traded those tickets to third-party ticket brokers for above one million dollars. The face worth of those tickets was above three million dollars. Williams described that the defendant purportedly stole revenue from a genuine business that employs many, pays tax, supports a non-profit organization, and carries income and excitement to their district with U.S. Open events at courses like the Merion Gold Club. Williams continued that felons that manage ticket systems like this prey on the excitement surrounding giant events, golf fans should remember that anything with a low price that looks too good to be true should be cause for concern and caution.
If sentenced, he would face up to three hundred years in jail, 3-year of supervised release, a 1,500 dollars special assessment, and 3,750,000 dollars fine. The United States Attorney’s Office explained that Robert Fryer could even be made to penalty his gains and pay restitution to the United States Gold Association (USGA).
The acting special agent in charge of the Philadelphia Division of FBI, Bradley Benavides, described that scam is simply not the answer if you feel your paycheck is not up to par.
