The dominant scandal of Andrew Cuomo (three-term Democratic Governor of New York), who has an extensive political period, just reached a bigger level.
On Tuesday, Letitia James, State Attorney General, said that her office’s inquiry into sexual harassment accusations against Andrew Cuomo, which features an interview with 179 individuals, acknowledged that he sexually harassed many women, including former and current staffers from 2013 through the previous year.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is even dealing with a federal investigation into whether his office had covered up the Coronavirus deaths of residents of nursing homes amid pandemic COVID-19, has been stressed to resign from his position by above 135 lawmakers of the state and nearly the whole congressional delegation from NY that even includes Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Chuk Schumer (Democratic Senate Majority Leader).
On Tuesday, numerous calls for the governor to quit or to be impeached, rushed in after the issuance of the attorney general’s probe against Gov. Cuomo. Moreover, a few hours after the release of the investigation, Gov. Andrew Cuomo rejected all the accusations and didn’t listen to the calls to resign.
Besides this, it has been thirteen years when a New York’s Democratic Gov. Elliot Spitzer has stepped down at the start of 2008 after accepting the accusations of having extramarital dealings with sex workers.
New York and federal’s impeachment processes are the same
Gov. Andrew Cuomo could face impeachment in case if he doesn’t resign from his position. Furthermore, the state assembly is having a probe that could result in a probable governor’s impeachment. The method of impeachment in New York is the same as it implements on the federal level.
However, a simple majority is required to impeach Gov. Andrew Cuomo (with a two-thirds majority of the judges of the NY Court of Appeals and the state Senate), required to resign from his job as a governor.
A New York governor was once before taken down from his position via impeachment in 1913. If Gov. Andrew Cuomo is removed via impeachment, he would be succeeded by Kathy Hochul (New York Lt. Gov.), who would mark as the first lady governor of the state.
Kathy Hochul is a sixty-two years old lady, who is a Buffalo-area native. She graduated from Syracuse University and learned the law from Catholic University in Washington. Furthermore, Kathy Hochul served as legal counsel and legislative aide to Daniel Patrick Moynihan (late Senator) and then Rep. John LaFalce.
